The experimental material consisted of 82 pigeonpea genotypes of medium to long duration. Out of 82 genotypes, 22 genotypes were screened for sterility mosaic by using Leaf stapling technique and petiole grafting technique in pots. In field, 82 genotypes were screened by using Infector hedge technique as well as Leaf stapling technique. All the 22 genotypes except TT 701 and SM 03-17 exhibited symptom of sterility mosaic disease when inoculated adopting both leaf stapling and petiole grafting techniques. Out of 82 genotypes tested against sterility mosaic, sixteen were free from disease and grouped as highly resistant, fourteen genotypes were resistant showing 0.1 to 10 per cent disease incidence, while twenty seven genotypes were moderately resistant showing 10.1 to 25 per cent incidence of disease. Rests of the genotypes were susceptible to highly susceptible showing 25.1 to 100 per cent of disease incidence.Keywords

The experiment was conducted in pots (30 cm in diameter.) which were filled with field soil. Ten selfed seeds of each of 11 genotypes of pigeonpea were sown in three pots at different dates viz., 15th September 2003, 25th November 2003 and 16th January 2004 to know the effect of different dates of sowing on the first symptom appearance and incidence of disease. Pigeonpea genotypes susceptible to sterility mosaic, exhibited symptoms of disease irrespective of three different dates of sowing. The highly resistant genotypes like ICP 7035 and ICP 8862 were free from sterility mosaic at all different dates of sowing. The incidence of disease in all genotypes sown in September was significantly higher as compared to incidence of disease exhibited by genotypes sown in November and January. The period required for first symptom appearance was significantly shorter in September sowing crop as compared to crop grown in November and January.Keywords

Selected lines of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L) were used to predict the heterosis for yield and yield components and to assess the reliability of prediction methods. The highest magnitude of useful heterosis was observed in respect of number of seeds per capitula (53.78%), seed yield per plant (27.23%), 100 seed weight (2.58%) and days to maturity (-2.87%). Only one cross, AKMS 1 x JLSF 228 recorded significant useful heterosis over the check variety Bhima for seed yield per plant (27.23%).The parents JLSF 228, A1 and Bhima were good general combiners for seed yield per plant. The predictive model was effective for describing hybrid. There was, however, the positive relationship between mid parent and hybrid yield indicating that mid parent may still be a useful guide for the selection of parents for testing hybrid combinations. The effectiveness of predictive and postdiction model differed for different characters except for number of seeds per capitulum and days to maturity for which both models were equally effective in predicting hybrid yield.Keywords
